1B - Youkilis or Fielder

May 16th, 2008 by Cliffy

Before the season, Danny was apoplectic at the mere suggestion that someone other than Prince Fielder would be the 1B in his “my team-your team” combination team discusion.  Its still early in the season, no doubt - we sit at roughly the quarter-pole of the season.

But let’s see how Danny’s beloved Prince compares offensively with my mope Youkilis, shall we:

The Almighty Prince Fielder - 164 PA, 5 HR, 23 RBI, 255/362/411–773 OPS.

The Clearly Inferior Kevin Youkilis - 174 PA, 8 HR, 30 RBI, 318/393/591–984 OPS.

Oh, well King Prince must make up for that (substantial) offensive deficit on defense, right?

Fielder - 387 total chances, 4 errors (.990 FP), 9.66 range factor, and .772 zone rating.

Youkilis - 260 total chances, 0 errors (1.000 FP - and every game adds to his all-time record for consecutive errorless games at 1B), 9.46 range factor, and .952 zone rating.

Looks like the Brewers staff is far more a ground-ball staff than the Red Sox staff, leading to almost 130 more chances for Fielder… so I’m sure in his next 130 chances, Youkilis will clearly commit at *least* four errors.  Um… yeah.

Okay, you can have Prince Fielder… I’ll muddle through with little ol’ Kevin Youkilis, thank you very much.

Okay, the acid is done dripping from my tongue now.
