Specter’s SpyGate Sequel

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

Roger Goodell met with Arlen Specter about SpyGate and the senator is still not completely happy with the situation:

I’m a Patriots fan, so probably biased on this thing.  My position is this is beyond a freakin’ joke - that Specter is trying to retroactively get his beloved Eagles their first Lombardi Trophy, and he’s wasting everyone’s time in this pursuit.

Can someone, preferably not a Patriots fan, tell me where I’m mistaken?  Is there actual value in Specter’s position?

The Fountainhead

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

First, I don’t know why on Earth CNBC was showing the Clemens hearings live this morning. That’s a misallocation of resources even more egregious than the hearings themselves - I expect Congress to squander time and money; it’s what they do. I expect more from a subsidiary of GE. Anyhoo…

I just couldn’t get Ayn Rand’s novel out of my head as I watched Roger Clemens - Gallery of Greatness inductee and quite possibly the greatest pitcher ever - grilled by a motley assortment of intellectual pygmies led, appropriately if not admirably, by Henry Waxman. None of these men have ever excelled at anything to the degree Clemens has excelled at his craft, yet they seek their own ancillary glory in attempting to diminish his. In doing so they revealed the incredible smallness of their character. Small men, unworthy of their office.

One thing that baffles me is that the questioning broke so heavily along partisan lines, with Democrats generally focusing their ire on Clemens, and Republicans generally attacking McNamee. Is there some partisan angle on this of which I am unaware? Lord knows the House GOP contingent hasn’t distinguished itself as a bastion of Randian thought, so I don’t think its the Ryan-Neumann thesis. Is it purely random, or is there some weird partisan angle to this?

Do PEDs actually help?

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

Do PEDs actually help and/or are they “bad” for the athletes who take them?  Two articles which discuss this:

The second article is far longer than the first - but they discuss the same basic theory:  Perhaps athletes are taking nothing more than placebos when they take PEDs and/or HGH.

Worst sports radio caller. Ever.

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

OK, so we’ve have ALL heard our fair share of morons who call in to local (and national) sports radio.

Well, I think I have the all-time winner. I’m listening to local radio today, and they were talking Superbowl. Some Steelers fan calls in to say that Eli didn’t really do much in the playoffs, that the defense carried him.

Let me type that again - a STEELERS fan said that a quarterback was carried by the defense.

Has there been a bigger case of the Pot calling the Kettle black? Seriously? Yeah, good ol’ Big Ben did a real nice job in the Superbowl - that 22.6 rating is just stellar.

To their credit, the hosts laughed him off the air.
Shouldn’t there be some sort of IQ test before calling in??

Bruschi in Five Super Bowls

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

Tedy Bruschi has now joined a select list of players who’ve played in at least five Super Bowls in their careers - and who knows, maybe next year he’ll become only the second guy to appear in six.

Here’s the list of players (with number of SB wins in parentheses) and the teams they went to the Super Bowl with:

Sideline Reporters

Monday, February 11th, 2008

I am sorry… if you are a sideline reporter, don’t you have to offer some unintentional comedy, i.e. Eric Dickerson, Lynn Swann, or be a hot chick ala Melissa Stark.  I may be toasty right now, but just saw an interview with Holly Rowe, and was shocked.  Had never seen her before, and thank god for that.  Awful.. .just awful… can’t ESPN afford a program to teach playboy playmates to ask the “insightful” questions

WnBa

So, I am watching Villanova/Georgetown.   4 point game.  5 minutes to go… and then all of a sudden there is a “score alert”  Rutgers is beating Tennessee by 1 with 3 minutes left.  Interesting… do I change the channel… I am torn.. then I saw the fine print that said that Tennessee =  the Lady Vols… so I decided to stick it out with the G-Town game.. Is that sexist?

Rocker

If major league baseball is looking for a reliable witness, I think they have their man.  A year ago, I could care less about the steroid story, but now I am fascinated.  I guess the Clemens story has peaked my interest.

Tiki Barber is officially a prick…

He’s the greatest RB in Giants History, and provided me with many great memories, but taking some credit for the SB Victory?

Puh-leeze, Tiki - just stick to your happy life on the Today show and just shut-the-fuck-up about the New York Giants, OK?
