Friday, April 25th, 2008

Went to a Red Sox-Angels game yesterday, and here are the numbers for the respective starting pitchers:

Turnbow

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

You may not realize it, but the Brewers are currently carrying 14 pitchers and 11 hitters. I believe that is unprecedented. Part of the reason is that Ben Sheets is going to miss a start, so in reality, they are going with a 13 man staff, but that is still too many pitchers. One of those pitchers is Derrick Turnbow, recently referred to by Yost as All-Star reliever Derrick Turnbow. (more…)

It is time for a Brewers post. Needless to say it has been a very interesting opening to the season. Let’s start with Gagne and the bullpen.

Isiah Thomas: Codename “Persona Non Grata”

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Do you remember that “Seinfeld” episode where George Costanza’s employer tries to get him to quit - rather than just fire him? They eventually board up his office so he can’t get into it - but he ends up going in through the air duct, and then (at first calmly) calls the secretary to advise her that if anybody’s looking for him, he (now shouting) “will be in my office!”

George Costanza… meet Isiah Thomas:

The Montreal Cana-divers

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Wow. Do the Montreal Canadiens employ Greg Louganis as an assistant coach? If Canada’s Olympic Team runs short of skilled divers to send to Beijing later this summer, the Canadiens roster is full of suitable replacements. Heck - the Canadian Olympic Diving Team could learn a thing or two from their hockey counterparts. For their first round matchup with the Bruins, the Canadiens acting skills were more Oscar-worthy then Daniel Day-Lewis in “There Will Be Blood” (horrible movie, btw, but I digress).

I looked up the “diving” rule in the NHL rulebook: (more…)

Rioting in Montreal… after a first-round victory?

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

http://www.nationalpost.com/news/canada/story.html?id=463718

Huh?  The Canadiens have won 22 Cups in their long and illustrious history, but haven’t won one since 1993.  Still… they just won a *first*-round series, (more…)

Jed Lowrie

Monday, April 21st, 2008

Have you heard of Jed Lowrie?  He was a first-round draft choice of the BoSox in 2005.  He was the 2007 Red Sox Offensive Player of the Year.  He name was bandied about in the Santana trade discussions this past offseason.  He’s a SS - but can play 2B and 3B as well.  You may know some or all of this.

But did you know that before the season started, one of the guys on local sportstalk radio predicted that Lowrie would be starting for Julio Lugo before the end of *this* season?  He then amended it to say before *this* Memorial Day.  Sounds silly, doesn’t it?  Lugo’s only into his second year of a 4-yr/$36 million contract.  No way the Sox sit Lugo for some minor leaguer that you’d probably not heard of until the Santana trade talks, right?

In case you haven’t been paying attention, and judging by the lack of posts, you haven’t… the NHL has started its annual Stanley Cup Playoffs.  Some of you will remember the Stanley Cup as that shiny bauble that we drank from almost five years ago… while others of you will remember it as… well, that shiny bauble that you *could* have drank from with us five years ago.  But I digress…
