UGH

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Really….I have to deal with this now. After an offseason of moves that have basically been positive (cutting ties with Estrada Jenkins, Vargas) signing Torres and Riske. Adding Mota….Melvin finally did the unthinkable. There I am enjoying a tight game on Tuesday night. 2-2 in the 8th…and who trots in from the bullpen Julian frickin’ Tavares. You have got to be kidding. Is there any player I hate more? Jason Johnson perhaps…Not even June and I will say it. The BREWERS are DONE

Dice-K without a loss, but with plenty of walks

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Coming into today’s game, Dice-K was second among AL starters with a 2.15 ERA - and nobody had more wins (7-0).  What a *great* start, right?  Well, yes… and no.

Soccer (Subtitle: And People Wonder Why Its Not More Popular)

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

So, the match today between Manchester United and Chelsea was dubbed the “Super Bowl of Soccer”.  Ok.  Me, I just recently figured out how the whole thing works with teams playing in more than one league at the same time, etc.  E.g., ManU and Chelsea play in the same league, yet were facing each other in the finals of a “league of leagues” for Europe.  I’m ok with that.

Top Ten Sports Movies (Non-Baseball Division)

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Last year we killed some time debating the top baseball movies of all time. This afternoon, procrastination will take the form of kicking off a post on the top non-baseball sports movies. Let me stipulate that I’ve never seen a bunch of movies that likely appear on many people’s lists, such as Rudy. And I was really unmoved by Hoosiers. Deal with it.

The Spectacle of Spector

Friday, May 16th, 2008

[Ed. note:  This originally appeared as part of an e-mail response specifically to Gonzo, but it is reprinted here for feedback from the group on whole.]

As for Arlen Spector, I can only hope that his brethren in Congress take him aside when the cameras are off and tell him to start taking his pills again.. cuz he’s off his rocker.  I would sincerely hope that the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee have any number of more meaningful things to do (like… clipping their toenails, or… watching grass grow - or, I dunno, stuff that pertains to the myriad issues actually facing our country currently) - and would make their senior peer aware of their desire to indeed focus elsewhere.

1B - Youkilis or Fielder

Friday, May 16th, 2008

Before the season, Danny was apoplectic at the mere suggestion that someone other than Prince Fielder would be the 1B in his “my team-your team” combination team discusion.  Its still early in the season, no doubt - we sit at roughly the quarter-pole of the season.

But let’s see how Danny’s beloved Prince compares offensively with my mope Youkilis, shall we:

Retiring at age 25

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Henin’s success in the sport is obvious, and since she doesn’t strike me as a moron, I expect she’s in good shape financially for the rest of her life as well.

But this got me thinking:  (more…)

Paps teaching Okajima how to play craps, complete with scratching out a table on the warning track.

You just can’t make stuff like this up.
