So… wow

I am not sure what is the most disturbing part of Mr. Tabata’s story.  A 20 year old baseball player married to a 43 year old, or the fact that it is a 43 year old with some issues.

David Price: This year’s Evan Longoria

Or.. maybe not.  As noted, he is already signed through 2012, so there’s no apparent benefit to sending him down purely to delay the start of his arbitration clock (as appeared to be the case with Longoria last season).

But… what more “seasoning” does this guy need, fer crissakes?  Hey, as a Red Sox fan, I’d *rather* he weren’t with the Rays - but I admit I don’t get it.

Back From Bristol

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009
I now understand why Bristol Motor Speedway is referred to as “Thunder Valley.” A half-mile track in what is essentially a huge football stadium (capacity: 160,000), the cars are never out of sight or earshot, and the roar of all 43 engines echos around without pause. It is also located in the very hilly Northeastern corner of Tennessee, and the track itself - in marked contrast with, say, the surrounding parking lots - seems to be situated on a small mountain, giving it added grandeur but making it a royal pain to climb up to. Bonus: there is an Arby’s concession stand inside the track. Plus, in contrast with other sports, you can bring your own coolers, food and beverages inside, so spending the day getting wrecked in the stands doesn’t require a home equity loan.

I’ll take some Cheese

I have to post about the Marquette game.  Yes, I realize that this may be a sour grapes whiny post, but it needs to be said.  Let’s start with the season in general.  I can’t remember a more disappointing ending to a season of any team that I have ever followed…. including the 1997 Packers.  A little background on Marquette… they are a level below the elite programs like Kansas, Memphis, Carolina, Duke, Kentucky…. I realize that.  Marquette is able to recruit 4 star prospects, but they will only be able to recruit top tier talent in certain years, when they have open starting positions.  They will never be able to recruit enough depth to be a truly elite squad. Schilling and Mussina - HOF-worthy?

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Curt Schilling officially announced his retirement.  I don’t believe Mike Mussina is officially retired, yet - but he’s on no ML roster and in no ML camp, so unless he makes a mid-season comeback (which I submit is unlikely), he’s done also.  Now since Schilling didn’t play last year (whereas Mussina did, winning 20, if you’ll recall), I believe Schilling will be eligible a year earlier.  Whenver each is officially eligible, is either (or both) of them HOF-worthy?

Cornell to the NCAA Tourney… in the Midwest

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

A #3 seed in the Midwest - will face Northeastern in the first round:

Losing (5-0, fwiw) to Yale in the conference finals will lead to that.  Conversely, Yale sits in the East as a #2 seed - with Vermont as their first-round opponent.

NFLPA’s new leader

Friday, March 20th, 2009

[I’ve posted this for Gonzo, since he seems disinclined to use this forum himself… must be too busy filling out all his brackets to click over here.]

They named their new boss today (DMaurice Smith) and he is a NFL outsider with NO LABOR LAW EXPERIENCE.
Yikes…
