Yankees Earn Third Consecutive Walk-Off Victory
Sunday, May 17th, 2009Johnny Damon’s 10th-inning home run gave the Yankees their third straight walk-off victory this afternoon. ESPN.com points out that this is the first time New York has done this since 1972.
Unfortunately that may not be the end of the parallels between these post-George Steinbrenner Yankees and the last pre-Steinbrenner iteration. The 1972 Yankees were a mediocre team (79-76, good for 4th place in the AL East), a decade removed from the last World Series championship of a legthy dynasty. They were also several years and near-complete roster turnover (and a new stadium) away from their next one; the 1976 pennant-winning team and 1977-78 World Series champs would retain only Thurman Munson, Roy White and Sparky Lyle from the 1972 team.
I guess we’ll have to wait for the next Ron Guidry to emerge from the Yankees’ farm system.
Options for Seeing the Yankees
Saturday, May 16th, 2009From the NY Post:
choose one of the two options to see a Mariners-Yankees game this season, and from the very best seats:
Option 1: Two tickets to Tuesday night, June 30, Mariners at Yanks, cost for just the tickets, $5,000.
Option 2: Two round-trip airline tickets to Seattle, Friday, Aug. 14, return Sunday the 16th, rental car for three days, two-night double occupancy stay in four-star hotel, two top tickets to both the Saturday and Sunday Yanks-Mariners games, two best-restaurant-in-town dinners for two. Total cost, $2,800. Plus-frequent flyer miles.
Slashed Ticket Prices Allow Lesser Nobility to Attend Yankees Games
Thursday, May 7th, 2009This is great. Also true:
“I know that part of what I’m paying for is the Yankee mystique, but seriously, even at half-off, this is a bit ridiculous,” said Raja Nuur Perak Ismaramudsa, who by tradition is descended from the ancient god of fire whose ribs formed the Indonesian islands that he governs from an alabaster and onyx palace. “There’s a limit to how much your mythology lets you ask of a person, and the Yankees are really pushing it.”
I’m really torn between the desire to see the new stadium, and my revulsion at a) the vast sums of public money used to construct it and b) the vast sums of personal money required for admission, and for beer once inside. As much as I love the Yankees, I think I hate being made to feel like a schmuck even more.
Manny being Manny… and earning a 50-game suspension
Thursday, May 7th, 2009Damn Barry Melrose…
Thursday, May 7th, 2009… he’s looking pretty good with his prediction that the ‘Canes would upset the Bruins in Round 2. The Bruins looked great and the ‘Canes… um, didn’t - in Game 1. But in Games 2 and 3, Carolina was simply the better team. Last night’s Game 3 went to OT, but Carolina could’ve just as easily won it in regulation. Even with that, the Bruins had a couple chances early in OT, but couldn’t convert - then the Bruins couldn’t clear the zone (again), and the ‘Canes didn’t miss on their opportunity. Game over.
Separated at Birth?
Monday, May 4th, 2009I’d like some feedback… is it just me, or were Hedu Turkoglu and our own Dan Einhorn indeed twins separated at birth? Seriously. The Celtics and Magic are on again Wednesday night. Tune in. I defy you to look at Turkoglu and tell me you don’t see Danny. I know I do… but maybe that’s just me.
Johnny Five need input.
Nick Green over Julio Lugo… please
Sunday, May 3rd, 2009Maybe it is not only ESPN
Friday, May 1st, 2009There was a starting pitcher this week, that became the third pitcher of all time to win a 1-0 game in which he had 10 + strikeouts and hit a home run.
Was there any National coverage of this? It made the 53 min mark of SportSCenter….
