Another new football league

Mark Cuban reportedly wants to start a new football minor-league. Notwithstanding the sorry history of start-up sports leagues in general, and football leagues in particular, it seems like a credible idea to me. That reminds me, what ever happened to the “new” WHA that was supposedly on the drawing board a couple years ago?

I believe it went the way of New Coke and the New Adventures of Old Christine. Actually, the latter is still around isn’t it? Well, there’s no accounting for taste.

Cuban was on local talk radio here today and went through the financial reasons that having a hard cap would totally screw the NFL. “We only need to overpay about 3 or 4 big names and we can think about crippling the NFL”. was the gist of it…..
No wonder the Mavs flamed out in round 1.

Yup… that business model sounds eerily similar to the USFL approach, and would likely be met with results eerily similar to the USFL (who did win their court case and $1… which was tripled to $3… woo-hoo).
If the USFL was in business, Steve Young would *still* be collecting on his LA Express contract. But it isn’t, so he’s not.
But hey Mark, go try the same thing twenty years later. You could be the Donal Trump of the league, taking the present-day Brian Sipe, Herschel Walker and Doug Flutie to… a league of financial ruin.
