Did anybody hear about this?

NFLPA’s new leader

Friday, March 20th, 2009

[I’ve posted this for Gonzo, since he seems disinclined to use this forum himself… must be too busy filling out all his brackets to click over here.]

They named their new boss today (DMaurice Smith) and he is a NFL outsider with NO LABOR LAW EXPERIENCE.
Yikes…

TO is a Bill

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Okay, so TO’s a Bill.  Is that good or bad for the Bills?  To me, the key is that it’s a one-year deal.  (more…)

Cassel (and Vrabel) to Chiefs for #34 overall… that’s it

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

According to this, Cassel and Vrabel for KC’s 2nd-round pick (#34 overall):

I’ve gotta say… I’m a bit disappointed.  (more…)

Mike Vick petition

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Okay people… the power of the pen… er, keystroke:

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/stop-NFL-from-reinstating-MichaelVick

The man will have served his debt to society - but let’s prevent him from trying to earn a living (ass-uming an NFL team will have him… and there will be at least one, as I’ve asserted all along).

I trust the folks signing this petition feel the same way about convicted child molesters, rapists, and murderers (of human beings, that is)… right?

Any Takers On Vick?

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

So the Falcons are looking to deal Michael Vick’s contract. Can’t blame them for trying to recover some value, but I’m interested to know if anyone expects any takers?

This Sporting News article makes what seems like a strong argument to me that reinstatement is not a given and will likely not occur before 2010.

Clark Judge of CBS points out that any team picking him up faces an uphill PR battle.

Chris Harry of the Orlando Sentinel suggests that Vick’s trade value may be a second *day* draft pick at best.

So what say you? Will Al Davis or Jerry Jones pake the plunge?

the ubiquitous “Super Bowl Blowout”? Not so fast my friend…

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Sure, there seemed to be a flurry of blowouts in the 80s and 90s - but my sense of this decade has been that more often than not, we get great games.  Go back 10 Super Bowls (more…)

SB 43 recap

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Was last year’s game as exciting as this year’s?  I didn’t particularly enjoy last year’s game - but that *could* be due to my affiliation with the Patriots… not sure.  But let’s not focus on last year, cuz this year…

What a great game!  (more…)

Super Bowl 43

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Pittsburgh is favored by 7 over Arizona; what does the OGS make of this? I still can’t quite get my head around the idea of using the terms “Super Bowl” and “Cardinals” in the same sentence, so I’m having trouble reaching a conclusion on which side I like - I intuitively favor Pittsburgh but wonder if I’m selling Arizona short. There were extended periods of Sunday night’s game - like the last four minutes of the first half - when the Steelers just stacked up enough mental errors to almost lose the game. What say you - which side would you take?

I Am Alive (and with a surfeit of free time)

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Notwithstanding my lengthy absence from the OGS, I am alive, and thanks to the ongoing bear market (its still not too late to short financials, incidentally), now have plenty of time to post here without pesky distractions like work. In honor of our numerous graduates of the School of Industrial and Labor Relations, I’ll start by linking to an HR-oriented post on the correlation between reining in locker room problems and success in the NFL.

I think the thesis breaks down a bit over the Giants and Plaxico, given how poorly they did in the weeks after he fragged himself, but overall it seems pretty solid.
