D’backs - Rockies

October 7th, 2007 by Cliffy

Okay, who *else* had this exacta for the NLCS last spring?  Um… I mean who had this exacta for the NLCS last spring?

I have no idea how this will play out, and I do fully expect that whichever of these teams advances to the WS will only be fodder for the AL champ on their way to a WS victory in five games or less.  But…

Wouldn’t it be funny if Randy Johnson gets his second ring in Arizona after getting no rings with the Yankees?  Yes, yes, I realize he’s on the DL and will be making no contributions to this postseason run (as opposed to his co-MVP performance in the 2001 WS).  But still… a ring before he got to the Yankees and a ring after he leaves the Yankees… that would be very amusing to me.

Wouldn’t it be funny if Todd Helton gets his ring in Colorado after almost getting traded (a couple times if I read it right) to the Red Sox?  And wouldn’t it be utter irony if he ends up WS MVP as the Rockies take out the Red Sox?  Course, Mike Lowell would’ve (apparently) been involved in any Helton deal and it’s difficult to imagine the Sox in the postseason without Mike Lowell - not to discount the contributions of Manny Delcarmen in short relief, who would’ve also been part of that deal for Helton.  Still… the story line of Helton-still-in-Colorado-to-take-on-the-Red-Sox-in-the-WS would be enthralling, don’t ya think?

On paper, I’ve got Arizona advancing - but they don’t play the game on paper… and the Rockies have won 99 of their last 100 games (or something like that), so who the heck knows when they’ll come back to earth.

Should be great theater, regardless - which is what the playoffs should be about.

I would actually think the Rockies would be the favorite. They are on fire right now. The Rockies are counting on very young pitchers and they have all produced. Ubaldo Jimenez has been very good down the stretch, especially at home. Jeff Francis is a very good pitcher, and Franklin Morales is pitching as well as anyone right now. The Rockies aren’t lucky, and they are well built for the post-season. They have 2 legitimate closers in Corpas and Fuentes, and a very deep lineup, especially against righties, when Hawpe is in the lineup.

Well, at this writing, they sit 3-0… winners of 20 of their last 21 (I think is the updated number, without checking). Mercy.
