It’s only one game, but…

April 3rd, 2007 by Cliffy

Okay, we’ve still got 161 games left in the season - and both of the Opening Day starters have another 30+ starts in the season (barring injury, of course).  But… Gil Meche sure looked like a guy that was worth $11 mil/yr - and Curt Schilling did *not* look like a guy worth $13 mil/yr.  Heck - Schilling made the Royals look like they could make it a *five*-team race in the AL Central.

All that said, that’s not get *too* crazy about one outing - especially the first outing of the year.  Back in 2002, Pedro Martinez opened up the season with this pitching line against the Blue Jays:  3 IP, 7 ER (8 total runs allowed), 9 hits, 2 walks, 4 strikeouts, on 84 pitches.  His ERA after that game was 21.00 - and the Sox lost the game 12-11.

He finished the season 20-4, with a 2.26 ERA, over 199-1/3 IP.  The Blue Jays finished the season 78-84, and the Red Sox finished 93-69.

Now Pedro was a lot younger than Schilling is now - and Pedro was a better pitcher than Schilling is now.  I concede that.  But let’s not get *too* crazy after one game… my only point.  Heck, the Yankees won a game that Carl Pavano started yesterday.  How often do you really expect *that* to happen the rest of the year?

Okay, I’m done now.

I’d still take Schilling over anyone on the Yanks’ staff.
