MLB doesn’t get it, example #642
So MLB announced on Monday that the first game of the WS will be moved from Saturday, 10/20 to Wednesday, 10/24. Thus, Game 7 will be played on November 1st, 2007. Wow.
However, that in of itself is not the point of this blog (though it could be, but’s that another story). Rather, it’s the reason for the move with made me chuckle. Obviously it was done for money reasons and money reasons alone. But, Bob Dupay came out and actually said (rather transparently, I might add) the motive was to “give fans more of an oppotunity to watch the games”.
WTF? Who are you kidding?
If that was REALLY the reason, wouldn’t it make more sense to - oh, I dont know - maybe show the games earlier than 8:30pm EST so that East Coast/Midwest kids under the age of 13 could watch more than 1 or 2 innings before having to go to sleep? Heck, an earlier start time would not only help the youth audience, but would also give adults on the east coast/midwest a chance to see the end of the game? G-d forbid a WS game actually ends before 12am EST…

Let me translate, I speak a little MLB-speak. When Dupay says to “give fansmore of an opportunity to watch the games”, what he’s actually saying is “ratings are down so we’re doing something different [sic] to see if we can spur ratings, but we’re not smart enough to consider moving games earlier so that more people can watch them - plus since football has overtaken baseball in popularity we reason it must be to the snow factor so we’re looking to introduce some of it into our game”.
And just in case there’s any confusion over Bud Selig’s comments regarding where he’ll be when Bonds break’s Aaron’s record, when he’s asked where he’ll be and responds “that decision will be made in the future”, what he means is “I’m still hoping he [Bonds] retires before breaking the record so that I don’t have to look like the utter hypocrite I am by either (a) being there when Bonds breaks the record of former Brewer Henry Aaron and thereby implicitly and explicitly supporting his run to the record, or (b) saying I’ll be elsewhere and thus explicitly denouncing his steroid use whereby previously, as owner, I’d implicitly supported it cuz it helped increase MLB revenues and helped me land this sweet $14 mil/yr job as Owner Mouthpiece… er, Commissioner”.
Any time you need anything else translated that emulates from MLB HQ, just let me know.
