MLB over/under for team wins

March 26th, 2009 by Cliffy

Saw this posted to the discussion group I reference from time to time:

(My comments next to select teams/numbers).

Arizona- 86.5
Atlanta- 83.5
Baltimore- 73.5  (under - no way they win 74 or more in that division)
Boston- 94.5  (looks about right, I could see a couple wins either way depending on how things play out)
Chicago C- 91.5
Chicago W- 79.5
Cincinnati- 80.5
Cleveland- 85.5
Colorado- 77.5
Detroit- 82.5
Florida- 76.5 (some have them as the “surprise” team this year, and I’m drinking that Kool-Aid… I’ll take the over here)
Houston- 74.5
Kansas City- 75.5
LA Angels- 89.5 (they will go over, or possibly *way* over, this… the division still sucks)
LA Dodgers- 82.5
Milwaukee- 80.5
Minnesota- 83.5
NY Mets- 88.5
NY Yankees- 97.5 (my uncle insisted the Yankees would win 105, then backed off to where I get him to commit to 102… I took the under on his “line”.  I could see the Yankees winning 97/98, but I expect age and divisional competition to do some damage to them this season, so if pressed - and admitting obvious biases - I’d take the under)
Oakland- 81.5
Philadelphia- 87.5
Pittsburgh- 69.5
San Diego- 71.5
San Francisco- 80.5
Seattle- 72.5
St. Louis- 82.5
Tampa Bay- 87.5 (many are expecting the Rays to fall back a bit from last year, but I’m not one of those people.  I fully expect the over on this one)
Texas- 73.5
Toronto- 80.5 (way under… I’m sick of expecting the Blue Jays to *finally* have a good season - and given that a couple of their young pitchers are out, and they did nothing meaningful to improve in the offseason, and they are in a tough division, no way way they win 80 games)
Washington- 71.5 (this seems “high”… the Nats are… well, they’re not good - they’re not just slouches, they’re tremendous slouches)

So… what stands out to you?

Giants seem high - their starting rotation is GREAT, but they will struggle to score 600+ runs. Then again, NL West is pretty mediocre, so it proabbly seems about right.

Agree about FLA - actually, I think they finish at 500. And yes, I will pounder that.

Mets and the under - they will not win more than 85 games. And yes, I will pounder that as well.

Yanks will win 100. Yup on the pounder.

No comment about the Brewers - you really see them as only a 500 team?

Brewers at 80 is a gift…. things do not have to go that well for them to win 86 or more.
I would also take the over on ATL. They have revamped pitching and 83 seems low
CIN is low. That is a very dangerous team. Volquez, Cueto, Harang, and Arroyo is a very solid staff, and they have a very nice nucleus of hitters, led by Joey Votto who will hit 40 bombs this year
SF at 80? no chance… that team is terrible. You just can’t win when your 3-4 hitters are rowand and one of the molina bros.
yanks have a lot of stars and scrubs. they have a huge hole at 3b for the first month, and in CF, 2B, C for the whole year. Red Sox and Yanks will see what it is like when you have an auto - out at the catcher spot… very spoiled with the Captain and Posada all these years. AJ Burnett is a huge ground ball pitcher that will badly miss the best defensive infield in the majors playing behind him. So long John McDonald… hello Derek Jeter… LOL…I’ll take the under on the Yanks….
I like what FLA has done, but that number seems about right… they have some holes in the rotation

I’ll take Gonzo’s pounder on the Yanks - he’s got over 97.5, I’ve got under. I’ll also take Gonzo’s pounder on the Mets - he’s offered under 85, I’ll take the over.

I’ll take Danny’s pounder on the Braves - I’ve got under 83.5, Danny’s got over.

    Anyone else?

  4. Gonzo Says:

I’ll take that pounder bet, Danny - Brewers and under 86.

And fuck me - I meant to type 88 games for the Mets, not 85. Oh well, 85 it is…
