Pitchers and Catchers Report

February 15th, 2007 by Gonzo

Is there a sweeter sounding phrase in the sporting world? Well, except for “….and here are your world champion [insert favorite team name here]”, I suppose. But I digress….

Except for pro hoops, I love sports, both to play and watch - football, hockey, soccer, tennis, college baskeball, college hockey, etc. However, my first - and still - true love is baseball. Always has been, always will be.

They can go on strike while squabbling over billions, my favorite team can suck for 10 in a row, they can taint the game by taking illegal substances - I’ll keep coming back cuz I love the game too damn much; sitting in the sun on a grass field, with a cold beer in one hand (make that two hands) , watching the players gracefully swing the bat or turn a double play.

And to me, there is nothing quite like the optimism that Spring Training brings - the winter (such as it is here in California) will be ending soon, and fans of every team (except the Pirates and Royals, I guess) thinks this year will be “The” year.

Some teams opened Camp yesterday, with the rest opening by Saturday - and I say, “Bring it on, baby! Baseball is back!”

You’re likely right about the Royals and Pirates (and you could throw the D-Rays, among others, into that group). However, this time last year, how many folks were high on the Tigers? I’m just askin’…..
