Specter’s SpyGate Sequel

February 14th, 2008 by Cliffy

Roger Goodell met with Arlen Specter about SpyGate and the senator is still not completely happy with the situation:

I’m a Patriots fan, so probably biased on this thing.  My position is this is beyond a freakin’ joke - that Specter is trying to retroactively get his beloved Eagles their first Lombardi Trophy, and he’s wasting everyone’s time in this pursuit.

Can someone, preferably not a Patriots fan, tell me where I’m mistaken?  Is there actual value in Specter’s position?

I mean… Belicheck’s been taping all along. Okay. Is this really a revelation? Game one of the 2008 regular season was indeed *not* the first time he’d done it. Is this newsworthy?

Whether you believe Belicheck’s contention that he felt it was legal or not… whether you believe that he was the only one doing it or not… heck, even if you believe it truly was the difference between victory and defeat in any games including Super Bowls… hasn’t the commissioner of the sport ruled on the infraction and assessed appropriate penalties (as he sees it) as a consequence i.e. already addressed the matter?

If Goodell felt that there were any games, including Super Bowls, that were compromised… wouldn’t he have done something specific about that aspect? I believe I’ve seen statements recently by Goodell (which confirmed what I’d believed back in September) that he didn’t think the Patriots really derived any competitive advantage - but instead, his penalty was because the Pats *continued* to do something that Goodell knew was going on and insisted to all teams be stopped. He was *not* penalizing them for the rule they broke, but rather for breaking a rule (that he’d just recently reminded all teams about).

Am I just being obtuse… or is Specter?

There’s a reason snarlin’ Arlen is the least-personally-liked member of the Senate; the guy’s a jackass.

No, Clifford you are NOT missing anything here. I would say this was the biggest mockery of a sham ever, except we witnessed what happened just yesterday on Capitol Hill…
