That ain’t no Hank Williams (Jr) song!
So ESPN moved from Sunday night to Monday night this season - and brought their own announcers, production team, etc… but they left the lead-in song. It’s still Hank Williams, Jr and it still gets me fired up, but for some reason… it’s just not the same as before. I can’t figure out why. But… it’s still far better than what NBC gives us before their telecasts (having taken over for ESPN on Sunday nights, and now having done the Saturday games on Wild Card Weekend).
That said, at least when Pink sang it, it had an edge. Hank Williams Jr is better, but at least I could summon a few goosebumps when Pink would rail. Then… they brought in Faith Hill. I think Faith Hill is better looking than Pink. Faith Hill seems like a very nice lady, and with hubby Tim McGraw, she is part of the first couple of country music. Hank Williams Jr is country music! But Faith Hill doesn’t play for me. She’s just not right for the gig.
As Junior shows us, its not about the genre - its about the individual. Hank Williams Jr. is perfect for the “Are you ready?!” lead-in to Monday Night Football (even if something seems a bit off to me this year vs. years past). Faith Hill is not right for NBC’s promo - Pink was.
My request to NBC executives: Show me Pink!
Thank you. That is all. We now return you to your regularly scheduled (albeit frustratingly infrequent) sports discussions.
