The divergence begins

June 22nd, 2007 by Cliffy

I previously posted that Julian Tavarez and Roger Clemens had produced two very similar stat lines in their previous two starts (the first two of Clemens season).  Predictably, their performances have finally diverged.

Game 3 (since Clemens arrived in The Show this year):

Pitcher A:  7.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 4 K, 97 pitches

Pitcher B:  4.1 IP, 4 ER, 7 H, 1 BB, 6 K, 90 pitches

Yup, finally we see the difference between the two pitchers.  Oh… wait… Pitcher A is *Tavarez*, and not Clemens?  Hmmm…. must be an anomaly.  Oh, I know… it must be that Clemens faced a great team and Tavarez was facing a bunch of scrubs!  Um… nope - the Rockies and Braves have basically the same record, and if anything, most would insist the Braves were the tougher of the two teams (although Colorado has been doing something right this year, for a change).

Regardless, I’m quite certain Roger will show that he’s worth the million dollars per start, or at the very least, more valuable than little ol’ Julian Tavarez.  Right?

Btw in case anyone’s lost count, that’s *three* Pounders… and counting…

And to follow up on a previous post, the Sox are now 5-1 in games started by Tavarez where he’s facing someone other than the opponent’s #1 pitcher.

And yes, with Schilling on the DL and Lester seemingly ready to join the big club, I’m very comfortable knowing Tavarez remains in the rotation.  Do I expect the above stat line for every remaining start of his this year?  Of course not.  But to beat a dead horse, I do expect him to consistently give his team a chance to win (unlike, for example, what Schilling did in his last start - apparently due to injury).

Okay, I’m done… for now.

I would argue that the Rockies are a significantly better offensive team than the Braves right now, espcially when the game is played in Coors field.

That being said, Tavarez pitched very well against the Braves and has kept Boston in games for a while now. He is never going to be dominant, but is doing a very servicable job in the #5 hole.
