Worse than I thought

May 27th, 2009 by shtiny

A few years ago, when Vince Carter decided to go 1 on 5 for an entire 4th quarter against the Rapters in a first round playoff series, I wrote off the NBA…. it had basically in my mind become unwatchable.  I haven’t seen a game since.

Last night I was at the Brewer Game and stopped into TGI Friday’s on my way out.  The Cavs/Magic game was on with 6 seconds left in regulation…..Cavs by 1… Magic ball…. OK.. I’ll check out the ending.  Lewis hits a turnaround 3 pointer with 4 seconds left.  When he shot it I thought it was a terrible shot.  First, he looked like he rushed the shot, and second, he had plenty of time and left too much time on the clock.
No  surprise what happened next.  LeBron James puts his head down and bowls over the defender who looked like he was just trying to get out of the way…. LeBron fumbles the ball out of bounds… game over….right…. Not in the NBA.  The ref calls a foul on Orlando.  I have seen worse calls at IM league up at Barton, but not by much.  How can you possibly let the ref decide a playoff basketball game after the Donehy issue?  A no call would have been my choice, but a charge would have been the second option.  King James hits both, and Orlando inbounds a tie game with .5 left.   Verajo tackles Howard….no call.

In OT, Lebron receives 2 more questionable calls against what I thought was another superstar in Dwight Howard.

NBA… you had my attention back for 5 minutes and 6 seconds… I am now OUT again.

Well maybe if/when the NBA expands and puts an NBA franchise in Milwaukee (or anywhere in Wisconsion), you’ll be back. Buck up little camper… there’s hope.

That out of the way, I can only watch the Celtics… can’t watch the NBA. I’d really like the Cavs to win, mainly cuz I think Lebron is one of those rare superstars who isn’t a complete asshole (yes, Kobe - I’m looking in your direction). He’s compared to MJ, and I think it’s apt - on and off the court. Yes, we had Jordan’s gambling for a little while, and after retiring, the divorce thing… but Jordan pretty much said and did the right things while playing. Lebron, to this point, is following that example.

I don’t want the Lakers to win (separate post forthcoming on that). I can’t get behind Orlando… dunno why - I just can’t get excited about them (even if Danny’s doppleganger is one of their key components). And Denver is still a bunch of thugs, no? Or have they changed their ways? I really like Chauncey Billups - but Carmelo Anthony and Kenyon Martin don’t do much for me.

Still… I’m not inclined to watch. I’ll check the scores each morning, and will smile a bit if the Cavs win… but won’t waste my time watching the games.
