Worst sports radio caller. Ever.

February 12th, 2008 by Gonzo

OK, so we’ve have ALL heard our fair share of morons who call in to local (and national) sports radio.

Well, I think I have the all-time winner. I’m listening to local radio today, and they were talking Superbowl. Some Steelers fan calls in to say that Eli didn’t really do much in the playoffs, that the defense carried him.

Let me type that again - a STEELERS fan said that a quarterback was carried by the defense.

Has there been a bigger case of the Pot calling the Kettle black? Seriously? Yeah, good ol’ Big Ben did a real nice job in the Superbowl - that 22.6 rating is just stellar.

To their credit, the hosts laughed him off the air.
Shouldn’t there be some sort of IQ test before calling in??

If there was an IQ test for sportstalk radio callers then… well, they’re be no sportstalk radio. Sure, occasionally you’ll get the intelligent caller - but generally you get (a) someone making the same point that’s been made at least a dozen times before, or (b) someone trying to be original by making an assanine point that’s beyond laughable (like the one you pose above).

I like to listen for the guests that most of these shows have on - as those are usually (though not always) at least informed positions, whether I happen to agree or not.

This may be why I enjoy “Mike & Mike” so much… no callers.

I like M+M as well; Golic tells it like it is, and will - shockingly - admit when he’s wrong (yes, Skip Bayless, I’m looking specifically in YOUR direction)…

Golic is very good - and the two of them have very good chemistry, the “what makes them different is what makes them great” schtick definitely works: Greenie the Metrosexual, and Golic the Ex-Athlete.

Skip Bayless may be the worst non-athlete in sportstalk… period. I truly can’t think of anyone worse. I have no idea what he brings to the table. He’s not even annoying in that Howard Cosell kinda way that makes you tune in to yell at him… he’s horrible in the way that makes you switch the channel or shut off the TV entirely (while muttering that you just wasted valuable seconds listening to him pontificate on yet another topic he knows nothing about).

On those rare occasions that I see a Skip Bayless quote which I agree with… well, I get scared. We previously discussed that, right now, Al Reba could go on ESPN and be one of the five best on the air. That’s true, btw. But right now, *any* of us (or our children) could go on the air and be better than Skip Bayless… at least a million times better. I truly don’t understand how or why he gets paid to do what he does.
